a yellow-field flag of the "Huseynyun" (the "Huseinites"). "Huseynyn" (حسينيون)
can be read in the middle, at the bottom of the arm holding a rifle. It is a
Shia-Muslim Islamist militia backed by the IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard
Corps); c. Sept. 2021. IRGC's Quds Force has been active in southern Azerbaijan
since the early 1990s. Although Iran and neighboring Azerbaijan both have
Shia-majority populations, the Iranian government perceives that Azerbaijan's
sectarian-oriented government is not revolutionary enough in supporting
Shia-sharia theology. A photo shows the Huseynyun flag draped atop IRGC Quds
Force commander Gen. Qasem Soleimani's tombstone.
